Psalms 119:67, 71 ESV

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.  It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

Ephesians 4:14-15 ESV
so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

Psalms 119:43-47 ESV
And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules.  I will keep your law continually, forever and ever,  and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.  I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame,  for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love.

1Kings 9:8-9 ESV
And this house will become a heap of ruins. Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore the Lord has brought all this disaster on them.’”

Galatians 6:7-10 ESV

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

2 Samuel 22:10-14, 17, 20, 34, 37, 47 ESV

He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.  He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind.  He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water.  Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth.   The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice.   “He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.   He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.   He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.   You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip;  “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,

2SA 19:33-37 ESV

And the king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will provide for you with me in Jerusalem.” But Barzillai said to the king, “How many years have I still to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? I am this day eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or what he drinks? Can I still listen to the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? Your servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward? Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him go over with my lord the king, and do for him whatever seems good to you.”

Galatians 4:1, 3, 8, 16 ESV
I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?

Psalms 114:6-8 ESV
O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?   Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,  who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.

2 Samuel 16:10-12 ESV
But the king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’” And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son seeks my life; how much more now may this Benjaminite! Leave him alone, and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. It may be that the Lord will look on the wrong done to me, and that the Lord will repay me with good for his cursing today.”

2 Corinthians 11:5, 7-8 ESV

Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God’s gospel to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you.

Psalms 106:7-8, 13-14 ESV

Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.  Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power.  But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.  But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert;

1 Samuel 26:19 ESV

Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the Lord , for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in the heritage of the Lord , saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

1 Samuel 27:10-12 ESV

When Achish asked, “Where have you made a raid today?” David would say, “Against the Negeb of Judah,” or, “Against the Negeb of the Jerahmeelites,” or, “Against the Negeb of the Kenites.” And David would leave neither man nor woman alive to bring news to Gath, thinking, “lest they should tell about us and say, ‘So David has done.’” Such was his custom all the while he lived in the country of the Philistines. And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”

Looking for a Commentary?

In years when I don't read through the Bible as I am doing this year, I like to read commentaries for a more in depth look at specific books. I've used a series of blog posts to help me find those commentaries. My only caveat is that these commentaries maybe any of the following: long, academic, reformed, or some combination.
