What's the Purpose of All This?

A friend told she didn't have time to post any insights into her reading. It made me realize sometimes it isn't clear what the purpose of these Read Through the Bible posts is.

While it is nice if folks post insight, my purpose is to motivate you to keep reading and stay as close to on track as you can.

So you never have to post at all. This is especially true if you stay on track.

But if you haven't read for a week or more, please post and ask for help from others. It's easy to forget and then realize after a month or more you haven't been reading. Post as soon as you realize and we can encourage you and suggest both tactical and psychological approaches to getting restarted and making the goal of reading through the Bible.

If you have to restart 20 times this year and don't get finished until June of 2015, you'll have still finished. That's my purpose in writing these posts.

  1. Thanks, Pat! I am already having trouble keeping up, but I intend to keep working on it as I can. I certainly am more focused on the days I get at least part of the reading in.
Anyone else find that they read ahead in one book and are behind in others?

  2. My only real concern would be if you are skipping some readings because you don't enjoy them or find them difficult. What you don't want to do is build up a big backlog of readings you don't enjoy.

However, some people do find it easier to not read in multiple books (my experience tells me that folks who have never read through the Bible do better with the shorter readings found in the four plan, but people vary).

Discipleship Journal does have a book at a time plan, http://www.gibsoncitybible.org/discipleshipjournalplan.pdf

The other thing to consider is why are you having a hard time keeping up? Do you need to change your plan and find a better time to read? Or is something else a problem?
